The number of people who cross through the San Ysidro and Otay International borders, coming from or going into the United States, counts over 109 million people every year. This number almost equals the entire population in all of Mexico. Therefore, approximately 300 thousand people cross the international border every day through these gates.

This number accounts for the second largest labor force in all of Mexico. Excluding the workers in the "maquiladoras" (factories), the remaining force is represented by those people who every day, or almost every day, get to their jobs by crossing the border through one of these gates. 10 thousand people are students attending school in the U.S. 90 thousand people per day are residents in the U.S., mainly in Southern California, but regularly cross to Tijuana and other nearby places.

From those daily 90 thousand people, 30 thousand are visitors and tourists, 10 thousand cross to get to their jobs or because of some business, and another 9 thousand go to some kind of medical treatment. Consider this statistic… 30% of every dollar that is generated from the tourism trade in Mexico, is generated in the border region!
